CURRENT EXHIBITION: Jefa Gallery, Byron Bay
Exploring themes on the suppression of female sexuality.
“Juni Ross's exhibition 'Bound' is a stunning exploration of the suppression of female sexuality through the medium of rope-bound and feminine-shaped clay pots. Inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Shibari, Ross attended bondage tying sessions to gain a deeper understanding of the aesthetics and communication of knots, while also exploring the fine line between vulnerability and submission.
What sets Ross's work apart is her willingness to confront her own feelings of claustrophobia, entrapment, and domination. This struggle is reflected in the pots themselves, which bear the marks of the rope and its indentations. Through the use of clay, Ross has created a physical representation of the tension between restraint and release, suppression and freedom. The exhibition invites viewers to engage in a conversation about the complex interplay of trauma, sensuality, and freedom. The pots themselves are beautiful, with their smooth, feminine curves and intricate rope patterns, but they also carry a weight of emotional significance. They challenge us to confront the discomfort of exploring our own desires, to examine the ways in which we may be suppressing our sexuality, and to find freedom in the exploration of our own bodies and desires.
Overall, Juni Ross's 'Bound' is a deeply thought-provoking and visually stunning exhibition that challenges viewers to engage with complex issues surrounding female sexuality and power. Her use of clay and rope as mediums offers a unique perspective on the contrast between being constrained and liberated and provokes us to consider the boundaries of our own impulses and desires.”
