CLAY MANDALA EXPERIENCE

Clay Social hosts immersive clay workshops and experiential events for all age groups, involving learning how to create with clay, collaborating with other artists, and engaging with unique practitioners.

Why a Clay Mandala?

Mandala is a Sanskrit word, translated as “circle”. The circular design symbolizes the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. Created as a symbol or ritual during meditation, it’s used to find one’s inner peace and sanctum. We ‘release’ the individual clay mandala at the end - to practice the art of none attachment – “nothing is permanent”.

As well as being a group activity, it still challenges the individual as they connect with the earth through the medium of clay. This unifying experience brings people together, while teaching them the art of connecting creatively within themselves. Each piece of the mandala is created by an individual participant of the workshop. The process can take up to 2 hours depending on how many people are involved or it can be set up to be an ongoing visual feast that keeps growing throughout the day.

Who is involved?

Juni is a ceramicist and painter. Her background includes producing events, as well as being a practicing artist, designer, and teacher based in Sydney NSW.

From a Buddhist background, she facilitates and produces these workshops - teaching the art of working with clay and the creation of a collaborative mandala.

CLAY SOCIAL

Clay Social was a Byron Bay-born project fusing ceramics, live music, and sensory connection. We launched with Black Rabbit George (lead guitarist from Tijuana Cartel) and even had the Versace Boys freestyle rapping about clay. As both a ceramicist and music promoter, I shaped each event as a full-body experience — hands in clay, music in the air, and people connecting over shared creativity.

We welcomed families of all ages looking to bond through play, and businesses wanting to keep their teams connected in meaningful ways. When lockdowns hit, we pivoted online — shipping clay kits nationwide and hosting virtual workshops that brought tactile joy into people’s homes and workplaces.

Cork & Claytime - with Black Rabbit George live on acoustic guitar

CLAY SOCIAL launches CORK & CLAYTIME - Opening night was guested by Black Rabbit George, the new incarnation of Tijuana Cartel's guitarist, singer, and songwriter Paul George. It was an opportunity for Paul to further explore the acoustic guitar that is at the heart of Tijuana Cartel and to pursue his long-time interest in folk and roots music. While people focused on making their clay masterpieces, he captivated their ears with his acoustic fingerpicking. Clay workshop hosted by Juni Ross (artist and ceramist).

CLIENT: GREY GOOSE / MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

PROJECT INFO: 

GREY GOOSE® partnered with MIFF, to offer festival-goers the ultimate Grey Goose experience on Opening Night at Hamer Hall.

Arrival was on a blue Grey Goose carpet to a launch night of 2,500 guests where they were engulfed in multi sensory, extraordinary brand experiences of sight, sound, touch and taste, reinforcing the brands position as the ‘Worlds best tasting vodka’.

From 28 July - 14 August guests were able to enjoy the GREY GOOSE® signature cocktail, Le Grande Fizz at select food and film partners around Melbourne.

CLIENT: SONY PLAYSTATION & SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT (SCE)

DURATION: 3 MONTHS

PROJECT INFO: I created 3d visualisations for the interactive cube in sketch up to accompany the build  at the Leipzig Game Convention event at the indigO2 -part of what was once the Millennium Dome in the UK.  The cube conveyed the new PSP’s digital capabilities as well as announcing the new products such as the Go!Cam PSP camera and the Go! Explore GPS navigation system.

OUTCOME: Successfully launched my brand and ran 15 themed events in total. working with an array of amazing michelin star trained chefs, singers & musicians, cocktail maestros and foodie bloggers. Sponsored by Asahi beer, and Del Maguel mezcal.

FAT CHEEKS is the brain/tummy child of St. Martin’s graduate and international woman of mystery Juni Ross. Along with a strong design and music background Juni’s multinational heritage instilled in her an innate curiosity of the world. Inspired by her travels FAT CHEEKS was a platform from which she could share her unquenchable thirst for booze, great food and good music (not necessarily in that order).

CLIENT: DEWAR'S WHISKY - LOCK INN

DURATION: 5 WEEK ACTIVATION

PROJECT INFO: 

Dewar's whisky has a rich history of travel and storytelling. We created a meaningful brand experience that would entertain, engage and educate consumers on the full range of Dewar's whiskies, including their famous and award-winning Single Malts. 

Having discovered a rundown cellar below the Grace Darling Hotel in Melbourne, we transformed this space into an Edinburgh style whisky den, using set decoration as environmental storytelling of the brands heritage.

The 5 weeks activation included private whisky master classes, signature cocktails and tastings, degustation matching, and an array of live bands that were reminiscent of a Scottish whisky Lock Inn.

The tastings went hand-in-hand with the rare chance to hear cracking stories from Dewar's Whisky Ambassador Andy Wren.

Morning Gloryville at Lost Paradise Festival

Asked to create a 2015 New Years spectacle at Lost Paradise, Morning Gloryville Sydney collaborated with the festival organisers to put on the ultimate New Years day wake up rave. 

We came up with the idea to wake everyone up with a pillow fight.

Sponsored by Lotus Belle tents we built the 'Pillow Palace' filling it with hundreds of pillows for the duration of the festival and to use for the pillow fight. 

DJ Klue from FBI radio joined us to bring the party to life for the ultimate wake up in 2015.

SOUND (PLAY) CE

PROJECT #SOUND{PLAY}CE - EXPERIENTIAL DESIGNER & MAKER

CLIENT: CATHEDRAL GROUP

DURATION: 3 MONTHS

PROJECT INFO: Sound [Play]ce is an interactive tower which focuses on the movement of a body through both urban and domestic spaces by creating a series of unique environments to which the body will respond acoustically.

Inspired by the dolls’ house that Edwin Lutyens designed for The British Empire Exhibition in 1922 –Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry, and Zaha Hadid were but a few of the 20 contemporary architects and designers, to design and build a dolls’ house for the 21st Century. Each dolls’ house was designed to include at least one feature that makes life easier for a child with a disability.  

In conjunction with HLM Architects I designed and built an interactive dolls house and handheld dolls cast in various materials. 

OUTCOME: Our dolls house was auctioned for 10,000 GBP

The differing sounds generated by a marble running through this system highlights a responsive design that aids visually impaired children with the often difficult process of forming global spatial images - be it during play or in the urban realm. By dropping a specially created ball bearing (glass, cork and wood) into the top of the house the ball passes through each room at random creating different sound effects from bells and chimes etc.

DOLLS:

With braille and ergonomic curves hand made dolls, were designed for the children to populate the house. Each doll is in a different material, demonstrating different weighted metals, ceramic, resin and rubber.

CLIENT: B&B Italia 

DURATION: 4 WEEKS FOR COMPLETION OF CONCEPT, DESIGN & BUILD

PROJECT INFO: Concept development and creation using standard toilet seats, wood & cable, commissioned by B&B Italia to create Christmas Trees which were auctioned off for the UK homeless charity ‘Shelter’.

OUTCOME: Auctioned for 5000 GBP. Increased Brand Awareness.
